From Microstates to Macroscale: A Review of the Maximum Entropy Model

Figure 5 from the review paper. The image shows an example brain scan, along with brain regions color-coded. The brain data evolves over time, and this time-depended activity is studied using the maximum entropy model and energy landscape analysis.

CONCEPT Lab has a new publication in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews exploring the theory behind the "maximum entropy model" and its use in brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The paper, From microstates to macroscales: A critical review of maximum entropy modeling and energy landscape analysis in functional MRI, includes a literature review of the topic, and a careful examination of the many different applications to fMRI, scientific findings, and relevance to clinical practice such as the detection of schizophrenia.
